Tracks

Lush rainforest, alpine scenery, sheer rocks, turquoise mountain lakes, crystal clear creeks, waterfalls, beech forests, wide grassy plains, beaches... you name it. Hiking in New Zealand offers just such an immense variety of landscapes, places of geological interest, fauna and flora to observe and its all topped off by the serviced huts and the very reassuring information and safety points of the DOC, the Department of Conservation.

In New Zealand, tracks are categorised according to their distinct difficulty levels. From EASY ACCESS TRACKS suitable for wheelchairs and small children as well, to SHORT WALKS, consisting of well formed paths for an easy stroll to enjoy nature. WALKING TRACKS offer well formed path for a longer walk, but not quite as long as the Great Track are. The renowned GREAT TRACKS are well formed as well, but usually not walked within one day and average fitness and abilities make the experience much more enjoyable.
The nights can be spent in one of the serviced or standard huts. Close to some huts campsites are offering an accommodation option as well.

Serviced huts offer a place to rest and recover from the days efforts, either on bunks or sleeping platforms with mattresses. Water supply, sanitary facilities and heating are some more much appreciated gadgets of the huts. Some of them may also have cooking facilities and a warden on a seasonal basis.
Fees: $10. The required Backcountry Hut Pass is valid for one year and can be purchased for $90.00 (adult) and $45.00 for 11-17 year olds. Kids under the age of 11 years are free.

For safety reasons you have to register your intentions at a Department of Conservation Visitor Centre (Glenorchy, Te Anau) before you start your hike, and remember to sign out when arriving back. In high season it is highly recommended to book your hut as much in advance as possible. Bunks are limited, hikers are many!

The Department of Conservation also offers information about snow conditions. In wintertime snow may make your hike difficult.
