Shotover river rafting trips float through Skippers Canyon, more recently known as “The Ford of Bruinen” in the Lord of the Rings.
The Shotover River is filled with breathtaking scenery and challenging rapids. Amongst these exhilarating rapids the Rock Garden, Sharks Fin, Toilet, Pinball, Germans Drop, Mother-in-Law, Pinball, Cascade, Jaws, Sequel and after passing through the amazing 170m Oxenbridge Tunnel, the Cascade Rapid. As you float down the Shotover River you will also see the relics of the gold rush.
The Shotover is an intermediate/advanced class 3-4 river, with rafting trips available all year round. Helicopter transfers are required for access to the rafting launch site in winter months.
The Kawarau River is the largest river in New Zealand with commercial white water rafting trips. White Water Rafting on the Kawarau River involves tackling it's four rapids: Smiths Falls, Twin Bridges, Do Little Do Nothing, and the renowned 400m Chinese Dog Leg. There is a comfortable alternation between thrilling rapids and calm waters. Experience also swimming in small rapids or cliff jumping on this extraordinary event.
The Kawarau rapids are of intermediate class 2-3.
