5-6 hours, steep climb to Lake Rere Lake Rere lies not far from the renowned Greenstone Track on the western side of Lake Wakatipu. Already in the late 1800 Lake Rere was a popular tourist destination. The legendary Earnslaw Steamboat, brought many tourists across Lake Wakatipu from Queenstown to Elfin Bay, from where a uphill walk leads to Lake Rere.
Today the walk to Lake Rere starts at the end of Elfin Bay Road. This 5-6 hour loop track first crosses a bridge and then follows the signposted route across Greenstone Station's paddocks. After about one hour Elfin Bay is reached. The first section of the walk is quite steep, but your effort will be rewarded when you reach the scenic Lake Rere. After crossing a bridge another short climb leads to the Greenstone Track, and back to the carpark. |
