Kingston, home to The Kingston Flyer, New Zealand's famous vintage steam train, is situated on the southernmost end of Lake Wakatipu, on the South Island of New Zealand. Kingston is a quiet sleepy town, with a small campsite/motel, a couple of cafes and bars, a petrol station and a shop. About 40km south of famous Queenstown, lies the small town of Kingston. When driving from Queenstown to Kingston you will enjoy the view of Lake Wakatipu to the right and The Remarkables and Hector Mountains to the left.
Kingston is the most landlocked town in New Zealand, and it is known to be home to the famous Kingston Flyer. This historic steam train, began service in 1878 and operated until 1979. At the start of its operating days The Kingston Flyer was a passenger service that operated between Kingston and the Main South Line in Gore at a distance of about 140km. Commuting on The Kingston Branch, a major branch line railway in Southland, New Zealand, it led to a big improvement of communications throughout the Southland region.
Today, from October to April, The Kingston flyer still departs Kingston Station two times daily to drive to Fairlight. |
